The fifth race of the Sand Marble Rally 2016 was held at Klimduin Schoorl on the 15th July 2016. 33 marbles participated in the race.

Report

Straight out of the gates, the racers entered a split. Coming into the split, Tarantula took an early lead, but had to fend off a challenge from Pollo Loco. While the two were battling, Dragon's Egg was able to pass to the right of them. Coming out of the split, Tarantula lost second to Pollo Loco, and shortly lost third to Silver Bolt. Through a sharp turn that followed, Ghost Plasma and Big Pearl were able to pass Tarantula, dropping them down to sixth. In a second set of sharp turns, Silver Bolt was able to pass Dragon's Egg for first. Through the same turns,Ghost Plasma was able to pass both Big Pearl and Pollo Loco, settling them briefly into third. the However, Glassy had gotten a good run through the turns, and had started to challenge for third. Glassy overtook both Ghost Plasma and Dragon's Egg in one turn, and at the next turn, they were able to overtake Silver Bolt.

After a few more turns, Ghost Plasma was able to pass Dragon's Egg for third. after the slaloms, the racers came onto a jump. Glassy kept their lead over Silver Bolt, and it looked like Ghost Plasma would keep third as well. However, Tarantula, who had a good run off of the jump, was able to pass Ghost Plasma coming out of the jump. At this same jump, Snake's Tub went flying off the course to DNF. The racers entered another set of slalom turns. In these turns, Ghost Plasma lost many spots, dropping back to around tenth, and Fantasy and Super Turtle went off the track. Through another turn, Silver Bolt was able to take the lead from Glassy. Tarantula kept third, and Pollo Loco secured fourth, but facing a challenge from Marbly McMarbleface.

The racers entered a set of sharp, hairpin turns, which cause a large pack of marbles to come to a stop. Marbly McMarbleface tried to battle Pollo Loco for fourth, but Big Pearl took advantage of this and passed both of them, coming into fourth. After a few turns, Marbly McMarbleface was able to pass Pollo Loco. Big Pearl attempted to get past Tarantula for third, but was unable to. Then, when Tarantula started to try to pass Glassy, Big Pearl swooped past them and took third. The racers entered a straightaway before a set of helices. Here Glassy overtook Silver Bolt for a moment, but went too high on one of the sides of the helices, allowing Silver Bolt to pass them. Additionally, Big Pearl carried too much speed coming into the helices, and they went off the course as a result.

When the lanes of the helices converged, Tarantula held a small lead over Marbly McMarbleface in second and Glassy in third. At the first turn, Marbly McMarbleface was able to pass Tarantula and take the lead. Silver Bolt managed to come back into fourth, having lost a few spots through the helices. The racers entered a set of small turns, but the top four kept their positions. The racers entered a teardrop, where Marbly McMarbleface got caught up on the lane divider for a moment. When the lanes converged, Silver Bolt led the race over Tarantula in second and Glassy in third. Marbly McMarbleface had dropped back to fourth.

Exiting the teardrop, the racers entered a set of slalom curves. Silver Bolt went too high on the side of a turn, and was passed by Tarantula and Glassy. Rastafarian was able to take second from Glassy coming out of a large pack of marbles including Silver Bolt and Marbly McMarbleface(who each settled in fourth and fifth, respectively). Through a turn, Silver Bolt was able to pass Glassy, making up a spot. The racers entered a split, where Tarantula, Glassy, and Marbly McMarbleface took the faster low line, while Rastafarian and Silver Bolt took the slower high line. This mistake dropped them out of the top five. Dragon's Egg took up the mantle of fourth place through the split.

Marbly McMarbleface was able to draft by Glassy as the racers came onto a straightaway, securing second. Glassy briefly took it back on a turn, but was quickly passed again. The racers entered a high turn, where Dragon's Egg was able to take third from Glassy. Tarantula led over Marbly McMarbleface in second as they came through some gradual turns. As they entered the final stretch, the top two were separated by just a few lengths. Marbly tried to pass on the left of Tarantula, but saw that Tarantula was moving to block. In a last minute move, Marbly McMarbleface faked to the right of Tarantula, and when Tarantula was far enough to the right, Marbly McMarbleface put on a burst of speed to take the lead right at the finish line.

This eleventh-hour lunge was enough to get Marbly McMarbleface the victory, just 0.13 seconds ahead of Tarantula. Dragon's Egg finished in third, after their late pass of Glassy on the high turn. Just before Glassy, however, came Mocha Madness, a racer who had not done much the entire race, was able to take fourth, leaving Glassy fifth place. Coming across in sixth was Starman, their second top ten finish in a row. In seventh came Blazing Fireball, with their first top ten finish this season. Blue Smoke, the winner of the qualifying round for the first race, finished eighth. In ninth place came H2 Blue, narrowly ahead of Rastafarian, who had dropped all the way from second to tenth by taking the wrong lane of the split. This race was brutal for many racers, having the most DNFs of the season so far. Big Pearl, Black Knight, Cobra, Comet, Crazy Cat's Eye, Deep Ocean, El Capitan, Fantasy, Reflektor, Snake's Tub, Super Turtle, and White Widow made up this race's 12 DNFs.
