The fourth race of Marble Rally Season 5 was held on 6th October 2020 at Dopersduin Bregtdorp. 20 marbles participated in the race.

Race

Report

Set in one of the worst conditions (both weather and sand) ever for a Marble race, the 20 marbles were ready to face one of their biggest challenges yet. The starting gate had to be opened manually, but once it did, chaos reigned. El Capitan set out for the lead with Cobra slightly behind before falling fast out of the top 5. Pollo Loco took the lead at the rotating chevron while Quicksilver also passed El Capitan to take second with Lollipop not far behind. Red Number 3 hit the chevron and dropped down in the race being passed by Ghost Plasma and Cobra among others. El Capitan took advantage of a split by Pollo Loco and Quicksilver to take the lead back while Quicksilver lost draft and was passed by Lollipop, Red Number 3, Crazy Cat's Eye, Cobra, Marbly McMarbleface, Comet, and Blazing Fireball to fall to 10th. In the meantime Red Number 3 ran into more bad luck on the curves and fell out of the top 5. A three way duel erupts between El Capitan, Lollipop, and Pollo Loco with the latter getting sent down the standings. Lollipop led the way as the marbles approached the shuffleboard. This time the shuffleboard claimed Comet, Pollo Loco, and Blizzard Blaster causing them to stop before eventually getting free by the Ghost Marble (who came to a halt there). The shuffleboard did not seem to affect Lollipop but a lot changed behind them with Nemo taking second and Quicksilver retuning to the top 3. Summer Sky and Ghost Plasma were not that far behind either. At the split off, Summer Sky wisely took the short cut and the lead since Lollipop and Nemo were forced around the long way. Marbly McMarbleface also took the shortcut and sprinted toward the top 5. Up at the top of the split, Dragon's Egg who won the previous race, came to an abrupt stop while Comet collided behind them causing both to DNF. Summer Sky crossed the halfway point in first with Lollipop, Nemo, Marbly McMarbleface, and Ghost Plasma rounding out the top 5. The rest of the top 10 included Superball, Cobra, Quicksilver, Slimer, and El Capitan. The diverging paths proved well for Marbly McMarbleface as they took another great opportunity to move to second place behind Summer Sky. Cobra began their surge to third as well. The second diverging path segment proved costly for then-leader Summer Sky as they slid into the median and stopping for a long while before getting going again well behind the rest of the pack. Meanwhile on the top path, Cobra sees this and takes off for the lead. Nemo and Slimer also took advantage of the top path. Cool Moody then comes out of nowhere and jumps into the top five while Nemo starts to fall back. At the final curve Cobra holds on to pick up their first ever victory and seal one of the greatest upsets in the history of the Sand Marble Rally. Slimer and Ghost Plasma took second and third respectfully, with the latter not getting stuck near the line unlike in the previous race. They were followed by Cool Moody, Marbly McMarbleface, Quicksilver, Superball, Lollipop, Black Knight, El Capitan, and Ducktape. However, Crazy Cat's Eye bumped into Nemo near the end and got stuck right around the same spot that Ghost Plasma got stuck previously. Help did not come in the form of Red Number 3, Pollo Loco, Blazing Fireball, or Blizzard Blaster as they each passed Crazy Cat's Eye to finish. Then after some time, Summer Sky passes by and finishes the race in 17th meaning that Crazy Cat's Eye DNF'd. The 114 overtakes in the top 5 were the most in one race since those were tracked dating back to the previous season. No podium ceremony was held because of a production issue.
