Team Primary are a yellow, red and blue team introduced in Marble League 2016, and are currently represented by Imar, Prim, Rima, Mary, with Aryp joining in 2018 as the team's reserve member.

Coming from the cities of Van Gotterdam and Knikkegen (later Nijellen), Team Primary debuted in 2016, winning two medals as they finished 12th. They would qualify for Marble League 2017, and despite a strong start to the season in part to Mary's gold at Funnel Race and a bronze at the Fidget Spinner Collision, they would finish 14th after a poor run of form, including a disqualification in the Relay Run. They would fail to qualify for the next four editions of the Marble League, though Prim and Mary competed in Marble League 2018 as Team Momary, after Team Momo lost two of its members to injury in Bobsled. After finishing 3rd in Marble League Showdown 2021, they would qualify for Marble League 2022, finishing 8th after a strong end to the season, clinching one gold and two silvers.

Team Primary were invited to all four seasons of Marbula One, of which they were notorious for their lopsided performances between its two racers, which happened in two of their four seasons. In Marbula One Season 1, Prim finished 4th with a silver medal, while Mary finished last with zero points. In Marbula One Season 3, Aryp finished 5th with a silver and a bronze, while Prim finished last on three points, all of which came from a pole position at the Momotorway Grand Prix. In Marbula One Season 4, Aryp and Rima's consistency would lead to Team Primary finishing second overall.

History[]

Pre-Marble League[]

Team Primary come from the cities of Van Gotterdam and Knikkegen in Central Europe. Siblings Prim and Mary grew up in the center of Van Gotterdam, which has the reputation as the art capital of the world, along with their older sibling Rose. Their parents were art connoisseurs, and the siblings had been trained to do the same. They both attended the Van Gotterdam Academy of Art, the most prestigious art school in the world, and both graduated with a B.S. in Art Restoration. They carried out major restoration projects at many sites across Marblearth including at Colina Umerun, Om Temple (where they first met Team Momo), and the Acrollpolis in Sotsevsa.[4]

Rima grew up in Knikkegen, a city southeast of Van Gotterdam, and had no interest in art. They had always dreamed of becoming a marble sports athlete. They watched Jelle Bakker's Knikkegen Marble League racing competition and, when they were old enough, they entered the tournament and won their first competition. Imar, another future member of Team Primary, came in second. The next year, Rima and Imar became friends, and Imar went on to win a race in a three-way photo finish between them, Rima, and Lightning, a future member of the Thunderbolts.

The KML appeared in a TV featurette about the growing popularity of marble sports and, due to the high quality of Jelle's competition, marbles from across the world applied to take part. Prim and Mary watched the featurette and saw the art in marble sports, and so applied for participation in the 2014 KML. They were accepted, much to their surprise, for they had barely been training.

The siblings' determination kickstarted their friendship with veterans Rima and Imar, leading the four to form a team to compete in the tournament's first team events, calling themselves Team Primary. This name was not just because of Prim and Mary's studies of color theory, but more importantly, the team's firm belief in teamwork, something they value the most. They placed in the top ten in 2014 and proceeded to win the 2015 KML.

The increasing popularity of the KML attracted the attention of Greg Woods, who was running the North American Fruit Circuit. Jelle met Woods in 2014, and began planning an expansion to the KML, noting Woods' strong commentating abilities, coupled with their ability to reach out to teams around the world. In 2014, they added an international league. In 2015, they took this further, and Jelle announced a new tournament, the Marble League. The best performing teams from different regions of the world would be invited to take part.

Team Primary and the Thunderbolts were both invited from the KML to take part in Marble League 2016. Team Primary, lacking a formal training ground, were offered the Bakker Bowl, the stadium where the KML was held. Once Team Primary had finished constructing their own stadium outside of Van Gotterdam, Palette Park, the Bakker Bowl was refurbished as part of the preparations for Marble League 2016.[2]

2016[]

Marble League 2016 started off poorly for Team Primary. They came in second-to-last in Event 1, Balancing, and finished 13th in Event 2, the Relay Race. However, they won their first medal of the competition, a bronze, in Event 3, Collision. Rima came fourth in Event 6, the Water Race, and Imar earned a silver medal in Event 7, the High Jump, putting the team in seventh overall. Unfortunately, Team Primary proceeded to earn no points for the rest of the competition and finished in 12th overall. It was clear that the team needed more training to compete with the more experienced teams.[2]

2017[]

Team Primary entered the Marble League 2017 Qualifiers in a transfer position, but surprised everyone by finishing second overall. They kept up the momentum as they entered Marble League 2017, earning their first gold medal in Event 1, the Funnel Race, especially surprising as during the qualifiers Team Primary earned no points in this event. The team only came 12th in Event 2, the Long Jump, but managed to win a bronze medal in Event 3, Fidget Spinner Collision, bringing them back to first place in the standings.

However, Team Primary were distraught to hear that Momomomo's injury in the event would make them unable to compete in the rest of the competition. They were one of the first teams to reach out to Team Momo. After learning of the cost of the surgery, Prim and Mary contacted their parents and held an art auction to raise money for Team Momo, so as to help fund Momomomo's recovery.

Afterwards, Team Primary's performance plummeted, and they went on to finish within the bottom half in all but one subsequent events, including a disqualification from Event 6, Relay Run, for false starting – Imar left their block too early. Needless to say, the team could not turn things around following that mishap, and they concluded Marble League 2017 in 14th overall with 71 points.

Near the end of 2017, the team recruited Aryp, who had previously competed in the Tour de Vellis, as their reserve member. Tensions in the team were beginning to mount due to a lack of defined leadership within the team causing internal issues that were left unresolved.

Seeded into Group C of the Marble League 2018 Qualifiers, the team managed to win the first event, Curling, but their poor performances for the rest of the Qualifiers made them miss out on qualifying by four points. The team gained a negative reputation for fighting after the end of the final event of the Qualifiers, Halfpipe, where they got to face off against the Balls of Chaos in the final heat.

During the heat, Prim collided with Tumult. After the end of the heat, Tumult accused Prim of trying to knock them out of the way. Prim wasn't happy with this and attacked Tumult in retaliation. An inevitable fight broke out between Team Primary and the Balls of Chaos, and their respective fans started fighting in stands. Team Primary were disappointed that they failed to qualify for the first time. The team planned to make the most of the time by watching the competition, travelling around the world, visiting family, and training.[2]

2018[]

During the fourth event of Marble League 2018, Bobsled, Momomo and Momomomo of Team Momo were both injured. Rima suggested to Team Primary's coach, Prima, that they should take the place of the injured marbles. Prima initially said no, suggesting a green team like the Jungle Jumpers would be better suited. However, they later realized this would be an opportunity for some from the team to compete, and so they reluctantly agreed. Prim and Rima were initially chosen to join Team Momo, but the fans wanted Mary to join. Rima decided to allow Mary to take their place, and Prim and Mary joined with the remaining members of Team Momo to form Team Momary.

Team Momary first appeared as a full team in Event 6, Team Pursuit, coming in eighth and falling to last place overall. Momo turned this around by winning a gold medal in Event 7, the Snow Rally, making the team rise to 12th overall. They remained there after Event 8, the Snowboard Cross, but their silver medal in Event 9, Curling, put them in tenth overall, their highest position in the season. The team proceeded to finish in the middle of the pack for the next two events, rendering them ineligible for the top three. Mo then finished 12th in the final event, the Sand Mogul Race, leading Team Momary to finish in 12th place overall. Imar, Aryp, and Rima were not impressed, and made sure Prim and Mary knew their opinion. While visiting Thorston to watch the new Thunderbolts roster train, Aryp realized how bad things were and contemplated quitting the team.[4]

During the off-season, Team Primary participated in the 100 Meter Water Race and the Amazing Maze Marble Race, where they only managed to get mediocre results. Things were not going very well for the team. The five started fighting each other, and the rift between them grew.[2]

2019[]

Team Primary proceeded to perform poorly in the Marble League 2019 Qualifiers. After the first two events, the team were in 19th with only five points, and the next event was the Relay Race. Following in the steps of their poor 2017 Relay Race, the team did not finish. Imar collided with block and Mary didn't move. Prim and Mary appealed to the referees, who denied their request to redo the heat. Meanwhile, Limers fans were seen throwing debris onto the track, allegedly in an attempt to disrupt the Raspberry Racers, and Team Primary blamed their DNF on this. Rima, Imar and Aryp joined the appeal, but the referees still denied their request.

A fight broke out in the stands between Team Primary and Raspberry Racers fans. Coach Prima joined Prim, Rima, Imar, Mary, and Aryp before the six were escorted away by security. Team Primary fans were banned from the stadium. The referees claimed to have found no debris on Team Primary's lane. The team fell to dead last and remained there after the final event, the Underwater Race. Team Primary failed to qualify for Marble League 2019. The team left the competition on separate flights and seemingly stopped talking to each other for a month.

Prim and Mary returned to Van Gotterdam and received a friendly visit from Team Momo at their garden, The Palette. Once they heard of the news that Jelle had announced the Marble League Showdown, Team Primary regrouped and replaced Prima as their coach with Secondary, Prima being moved to the role of manager. Secondary chose Mary as team captain after going through several team therapy sessions, which helped restore relationships with fellow team members and raised their morale. The team returned to the Seven Seas Stadium to redeem their previous poor performances.

Team Primary started off the Marble League Showdown 2019 poorly, with a tenth place finish for Prim in the Sand Rally. However, they managed to finish fourth in Event 2, Collision, and the team jumped to seventh overall, a qualifying spot. A seventh place finish for Mary in the Funnel Race saw the team drop to eighth, the qualifying threshold. The final event was Balancing, an event they hadn't participated in since Marble League 2016. The team surprised the audience by winning the event, earning themselves a gold medal and securing their place in the Marble League 2020 Qualifiers.

Team Primary were later invited to take part in Marbula One Season 1. The team agreed to accept the invitation, and chose Prim and Mary to represent them.[2]

2020[]

Marbula One Season 1[]

Prim and Mary had opposite Marbula One experiences. Prim finished in the top five of every race they competed in, including a second place finish at the Momotorway Grand Prix, finishing fourth in the individual racers' championship. Mary, on the other hand, finished last in all but one of their Grands Prix, finishing 15th in their first race only because Wospy from the Midnight Wisps fell off the belt and ended up being a lap behind all the other racers. The team finished in seventh overall. Fans were infuriated at Mary's appalling performance, making memes accusing Mary of being a cube.[2]

Marble League 2020[]

The team felt inspired by Prim's Marbula One performance and felt motivated to do as well as they could. Unfortunately, during the Marble League 2020 Qualifiers, Team Primary had a mixed showing. The highlight of the Qualifiers was third place finish in Block Pushing which took them to twelfth, the final qualification spot. In the final event, the 5 Meter Sprint, Imar finished in 13th. Team Primary had gained 35 points, tied with three other teams, Team Momo, the Bumblebees, and the Jungle Jumpers. This tie resulted in them placing 13th overall, one place below qualification, due to Team Momo and the Bumblebees holding a gold and silver medal respectively, while Team Primary only held a bronze. The team would once again compete in the Showdown.

The most disappointing part of the qualifiers was Mary's 18th place in Funnel Endurance, failing to replicate their funnel success from 2017. Mary resigned as team captain and passed the position over to Imar. Mary and Prim both knew things would not work out with them as captain, especially after their time in Marbula One. Team Primary, despite their losses, continued to train at The Palette for Marble League Showdown 2020.[1]

During the offseason, the team enrolled at an art school in Van Gotterdam for some lessons on balance. They spent hours painting pictures of the team, portraying teamwork, balance and training. During this time they met Professor C. Rollsant, a former Knikkegen Marble League competitor who had won the competition in their debut season. The team and the professor got along with each other well and the professor offered to train the team in their spare time. The team started to complete various drills around the school during seemingly ordinary tasks such as performing a relay while cleaning a room, rolling up the banister of a flight of stairs, and learning about formations while playing dodgemarble. The team started to dominate the small competitions held at the school and felt prepared for the Marble League Showdown 2020.

Team Primary started well in the Showdown, gaining a silver in the Relay Run, followed by a fifth place finish in the Halfpipe. They unfortunately finshed with two subpar performances, a tenth in Black Hole Funnel and a last place in the Sand Mogul Rally. Thankfully, their point tally was enough to qualify them for the Marble League 2021 Qualifiers.[2]

Marbula One Season 2[]

After the Showdown, Team Primary received an invitation to participate in Marbula One Season 2 despite their polarizing performance the previous season. They accepted, and agreed that is was best for Mary to step away from Marbula One, sending Rima "Rimarkable" alongside Prim "Hard Carry". Prim opened the season with a mediocre 11th at the Minty Mania Grand Prix. Rima debuted at the O'raceway Grand Prix, and put up a solid performance as they finished fourth, sending Team Primary up to sixth place overall, above the likes of Snowballs and Mellow Yellow. They maintained their position with a solid performance from Prim, who finished sixth at the Honeydome Grand Prix. However, this was followed up by a three race non-scoring streak, including a DNQ from Rima at the Aquamaring Grand Prix, causing Team Primary to drop to 14th overall, behind their rivals, the Balls of Chaos.

During the break, rumors appeared that Team Momary would reform to compete in the Marble League Winter Special. Team Primary stated they would aid Team Momo if asked, but this was proved unnecessary when it was announced Team Momo had been invited and not Team Primary. The main four members of the team took a vacation in the break, staying at The Palette. Aryp went to visit relatives in the Himarblelayas, the location of the Winter Special. Aryp watched the competition with their cousin, Rypr, both rooting for Team Momo.[2]

2021[]

Marbula One Season 2[]

The team met up again in Lewara ready for the Raceforest Grand Prix. Rima took the team's first pole position of the season. In the race, however, their hopes of a good result were soon crushed, as they dropped all the way down to 14th. Rima was upset and stormed off to the locker room, having an argument with manager Prima, leading to more tensions in the team. They boarded separate flights to Om for the next Grand Prix. Things got even worse as Prim failed to qualify for the race at the Momotorway, a track where they had been on the podium in the previous season. With this disappointing start to the second half of Marbula One Season 2, the team dropped even further into 16th overall. The tensions in the team needed to be addressed. The team fired Prima after the race for their poor treatment of Rima and lack of support for the team. The team felt slightly relieved to be travelling home for the next Grand Prix. The team built the Tri-Tower in honor of hosting the event.

At the team's home race, the Palette Park Grand Prix, things got better as Rima qualified in ninth and finished eighth, moving the team up by one spot into 15th overall. The Misty Mountain Grand Prix, however, saw Prim's second DNQ of the season, Prim still appearing to be rattled by the stress after the Momotorway, with Prim admitting they needed a break. That break came as the next Grand Prix was delayed by a couple of weeks.

During this time, the team met with Rypr and interviewed them about the newly-opened manager position. Aryp spoke highly of their cousin, mentioning that they had co-managed a youth team, the Ice Chippers, with their friend Ripper. The interview was a success and Rypr was appointed as the new manager of Team Primary.

After the break Prim managed a solid fourth place finish at the Savage Speedway Grand Prix. Unfortunately, Rima failed to qualify once again at the final race at Midnight Bay. As a result, Team Primary concluded the season in 16th overall. Rima was disappointed but happy that they managed to relearn what it is to be a team again. The team returned to Van Gotterdam for the offseason and again took a vacation in The Palette.

During the offseason, the Strawberry Strudels, a team based in Van Gotterdam that had competed in the Fruit Circuit ran into Imar. The Strudels had split up after the Fruit Circuit ended but had made a surprise return in 2017 at a Van-Gotterdam-based marble sports promoter's race and had just finished competing in the Fruit Circuit Reunion. Team captain Shortcake was on the same plane to Felynia as Imar, who was travelling to the Marble League 2021 Practice Race. The Strudels had decided to explore other avenues as they approached retirement and had thought about asking if they could work for Team Primary as backroom staff, still wanting to contribute to marble sports. Team Primary agreed and arranged a deal where they would work for Team Primary while still being able to compete in occasional competitions.[2]

Marble League 2021[]

Mary was chosen to participate in the Marble League 2021 Practice Race. They managed to finish in ninth out of 28, which they felt was their closest finish to redemption in a while.[2]

Team Primary was seeded into Group A for the Marble League 2021 Qualifiers. They opened with a tenth place finish in the Swing Wave. Mary managed to prove their doubters wrong as they finished third in Funnel Endurance. Despite this moment of redemption, the team struggled in the final two events, finishing last again in the Relay Race before a sixth place finish in the Sand Rally. The team finished in ninth overall, failing to qualify for Marble League 2021, their fourth missed year in a row.

Team Primary returned for Marble League Showdown 2021. They did well in the first half of the competition, finishing in the top half in every event except for another poor result in the 5 Meter Relay. This included a second solid performance in the Funnel Endurance for Mary who got fourth place. Controversy struck during Block Pushing when Mary got stuck in two out of the four runs. Despite this, Team Primary finished the event in sixth, putting the team in seventh overall at the halfway mark.

Team Primary once again did well in the second half, placing in the top half for all events, except one bottom half finish in Marblocross. This included a gold medal in the Sand Mogul Race for Aryp, the reserve. Team Primary finished the Showdown in third overall, their best Showdown performance so far.

2022[]

Marbula One Season 3[]

After their overall podium in the Showdown, Team Primary received an invitation to compete in Marbula One Season 3. They accepted, once again choosing Prim as one of their racers. Prim's teammate, however, changed again, as Rima got replaced by Aryp "Color Wheel". The team started their season with mixed experiences. Aryp qualified fifth and finished third at the Tumult Turnpike Grand Prix, getting their first podium finish on their Marbula One debut. Prim, on the other hand, didn't start off well, qualifying ninth but finishing only 17th at the Sleet Street Grand Prix, being one of six marbles to get lapped by the eventual race winner Smoggy. Aryp continued to perform well with a ninth place finish at the Misty Mountain Grand Prix and a fourth place finish at the Mellow Meadows Grand Prix, having climbed up from a tenth place qualification. However, Prim continued their poor performances, finishing in last place at their next two Grands Prix. At the halfway mark the team sat in tenth overall, with a stark difference in the individual standings—Aryp in sixth and Prim in last place with zero points.

Team Primary took part in Season 1 of Marbula One, represented by Prim and Mary. Their season was notable for the stark contrast between the two's respective performance. Prim had a strong performance throughout the season and was the only marble to have scored pole position in two GP events. They also finished all but one of their races in 4th place, with the only exception being a second place finish in the Momotorway GP, where they lost the battle for first place to Clutter of the rival Balls of Chaos. Mary, on the other hand, performed poorly and finished in dead last in all but one of their races, which was caused by an incident from Wospy, causing them to fall to last. Mary also failed to qualify above 12th in any of the GPs they raced in. They would place last in the Individual Championship, losing a tiebreaker to Vespa.

Main article: Marbula One Season 3

Team Primary took part in Marbula One Season 3, represented by Prim and Aryp. In a similar fashion to Marbula One Season 1, their season was notable for the stark contrast between the two racers. Aryp had a strong performance during the course of the season as they finished all of their races in the top half, winning a bronze and a silver. Prim, on the other hand, failed to score a single point in any of the Grand Prix they have participated in except for the qualifying rounds of the Momotorway Grand Prix, where they clinched Pole Position and scored the only points they would earn throughout the season. Prim finished last in the Individual Championship, while Aryp finished 5th.

Trivia[]

  • Team Primary shares a rivalry with the Balls of Chaos due to similar-looking uniforms. This rivalry was apparent in the ML18 Qualifiers, when a fight broke out between the two teams after the Halfpipe event.
  • Team Primary is the only team that has ever competed in a Marble League season despite failing to qualify. This was made possible by the Momary merge.
  • The team's fans were banned from the Seven Seas Stadium during the 2019 Marble League Qualifiers.
  • In an interview with Rima, it was revealed that they came up with the idea for the Momary merge:

"When Team Momo called out for help last year, I was the one to suggest to Prima that we should merge with them. Prima initially denied, saying that a green team like Jungle Jumpers would be better suited to help them, but eventually realized that this would be an opportune chance for us to compete. Prim and I were the choice marble athletes to form Team Momary, but the fans wanted Mary to join. So Mary joined. And I was denied the chance to compete.”[6]
