The Balls of Chaos are a transparent red, blue, and yellow team introduced in Marble League 2016.

In Marble League 2016, the Balls of Chaos placed 8th overall, with 21 points, in a tie with the Jawbreakers, who placed 7th by winning the tiebreaker. In the 2017 Qualifiers, they tied for 13th, along with the Kobalts and the Snowballs. They were subsequently eliminated and did not participate in the 2017 Marble League.

However, in the 2018 Qualifiers, the Balls of Chaos dominated Group C and qualified for Marble League 2018 by finishing first in the group. In fact, the Balls of Chaos also performed very well in the 2018 season, staying within the top half of the standings for the entirety of the tournament, and earning two gold medals, one silver, and one bronze in the process. The team finished in fifth place overall, equidistant from the O'rangers in fourth and the Hazers in sixth.

The Balls of Chaos have participated in all Marbula One seasons to date, having their highest position being 4th in Marbula One Season 3 with 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals to their names at the season's conclusion.

On 5 December 2021, the team were revealed as the hosts of the extreme marble sports tournament, Marble ManiaX. Unfortunately, they placed last overall in the tournament. The team also holds the dubious distinction of the lowest point total in the current format of the Marble League, with 64 points over 16 events in Marble League 2022.

History[]

Pre-Marble League[]

Chaos

The four original members of the Balls of Chaos.

The Balls of Chaos are one of the oldest teams in marble sports history, dating back to the start of the millennium. They come from the city of Hunluen, the largest and most populous city in the world. Hunluen was established in the third century when settlers from the Om civilization migrated northeast in search of riches. They found a flat plain in the center of several river tributaries, where they established the city.

Over the next centuries, Hunluen spread beyond the rivers and extended southeast towards the bay, eventually becoming a hub for innovation in the 19th century. However, this also attracted the attention of other civilizations. Hunluen eventually opened the city to other civilizations after many negotiations.

Hunluen is also known for its oriental architecture, which evolved from Om architecture, becoming far more stylized, reaching out in all directions. The style is inspired by the Arms of Chaos, a universal symbol that is part of the Hunluenians' philosophy. It represents infinite possibilities by any means necessary, the very principle that defines the city and the opportunities within it.

The four original members of the Balls of Chaos, Anarchy, Clutter, Snarl, and Tumult, also live by this principle. They had been competing in marble sports youth leagues since they were very young. Unfortunately, they consistently placed within the bottom half of the standings. It seemed unlikely the team would ever compete in an international competition, but their love for marble sports, combined with the resilience stemming from their failures, was what kept them going.

The four continued to train together during their school years and were admitted to university on account of their outstanding performance record in marble rallying. During their time at university, the team began to compete in regional competitions alongside the Pinkies, including the MFC Championship League. They were the only team in the MFC that were still in university at that time. In 2014, they managed to finish in fourth.

In 2015, the Marble League was announced, and three invitation spots were offered to the MFC. It looked like the Balls of Chaos would miss out on getting invited. However, the top three finishers declined their spots, so the fourth-placed Balls of Chaos were surprised when they were offered a spot in Marble League 2016, which they accepted. The fifth-placed team also declined, while the sixth-placed Pinkies joined the Balls of Chaos. The last spot was then given to Team Momo, the top-ranked team from the Ramen Bowl, due to the indifference of the other MFC teams.[2]

2016[]

Boc-silver-ml16

The Balls of Chaos on the podium for Team Pursuit.

The Balls of Chaos had a poor start to Marble League 2016, with a last-place finish in Balancing and a disqualification from the Relay Race, making them the only team to have had negative points overall in the Marble League. The team finally managed to reach positive points after Clutter came seventh in Event 5, the Long Jump. This also made the team move up from last place to joint-15th in the standings.

True to their newfound morale, the Balls of Chaos proceeded to finish every subsequent event within the top half up to Event 11, Quartet Diving, where they finished last once again. This included their first medals, a bronze for Clutter in Event 8, the 10 Meter Sprint, and a team silver in Event 9, Team Pursuit. The team finished eighth overall, tied with the Jawbreakers for points, but behind them in medal count.[2]

2017[]

BOC17

The Balls of Chaos win their heat of the Relay Race in the 2017 qualifiers.

Unfortunately, the Balls of Chaos couldn't keep it up in the Marble League 2017 Qualifiers. They began with mediocre results, coming seventh in the Relay Race and tenth in the Sand Race, but followed this up with a fourteenth-place finish in Block Pushing. A ninth-place finish in the final event, the Funnel Spin, sealed their fate. The team finished 15th overall and failed to qualify for Marble League 2017. However, they did make a brief appearance at the closing ceremony, along with the other three teams who did not qualify.[2]

2018[]

The Balls of Chaos returned and participated in the Marble League 2018 Qualifiers and were seeded in Group C. The team went on to perform exceptionally in the qualifiers, starting strong with a third-place finish in Curling. In the next event, the Snow Race, Anarchy came in second following a peculiar incident that made them, along with all other marbles who competed in the group, unable to finish the race. The team secured their qualification for Marble League 2018 with a second-place finish for Tumult in the 5 Meter Ice Dash and remained at the top of their group with 25 points at the end of the qualifiers.

Boc TP Fight

The fight between Team Primary and Balls of Chaos fans.

Unfortunately, the Balls of Chaos' qualifiers came with controversy. During the Curling event, the team were tied in their semi-final match against Team Primary. However, Imar was found to be the closest to the button thanks to a blunder by Snarl, resulting in Team Primary advancing to the final. Following that, several angry Balls of Chaos fans tried to storm the arena. This led to scuffles between fans of both teams and other spectators got involved too. This incident helped to kickstart the fierce rivalry between the Balls of Chaos and Team Primary.

The rivalry continued in the final event of the qualifiers, the Halfpipe. In the final heat of Group C, the Balls of Chaos were once again paired with Team Primary. Following bumps from members of both teams on the course, the Balls of Chaos won the heat with a total time of 38.59 against Team Primary's 37.92, resulting in Team Primary missing out on the main tournament. At the end of the event, both teams got into a fight, while their respective supporters once again started rioting in the stands. Security marbles jumped in to control the situation and break up the fights.

Boc18 Halfpipe

The Balls of Chaos win the Halfpipe.

The Balls of Chaos had a great start to Marble League 2018, with Tumult finishing fifth in the 5 Meter Ice Dash. The team proceeded to become the first team to win two consecutive gold medals, which they did in the next two events. Anarchy also set a Marble League Record in Event 2, the Ski Jump. The team rose to first in the standings after another gold in the Halfpipe event and stayed in first even after finishing in 15th in the next event, the Bobsled.

The return of their rivals, Team Primary, in the form of Team Momary, threw the Balls of Chaos off. The team proceeded to finish within the bottom half for the next three events, and they fell to fifth. Anarchy managed to turn it around by winning a silver medal in Event 8, the Snowboard Cross, moving the team back to second overall. But another run of three-bottom half finishes took them out of the top three again. After the Ice Hockey event, which marked Disarray's debut for the Balls of Chaos as the reserve member, the team dropped to seventh overall, their lowest position in the season.

Boc18 SMR

Tumult finishes third in the Sand Mogul Race.

The Balls of Chaos decided to have Tumult participate in the final event, the Sand Mogul Race. Using their experience from the 5 Meter Ice Dash event in both the qualifiers and the main tournament, Tumult managed to win the team a bronze medal. This made the team conclude Marble League 2018 in fifth overall, which was their best result ever in the Marble League, leaving the team proud of their accomplishments.

The Balls of Chaos also participated in two off-season events. Tumult impressed the audience by coming 10th in the 100 Meter Water Race, but the team faltered in the Amazing Maze Marble Race, finishing 18th.[2]

2019[]

Boc19 Funnel

Clutter finishes in second in the Funnel Race.

In 2019 the team made Anarchy the team captain. Even with their failure at the Amazing Maze Marble Race, expectations were high for the Balls of Chaos going into the Marble League 2019 Qualifiers. They managed to keep up with the expectations with a second-place finish for Clutter in the Funnel Race and a third-place finish in the Relay Race. Their two sub-par finishes notwithstanding, the team finished in seventh, qualifying for Marble League 2019. Harmony joined as their coach after the Qualifiers.

Marble League 2019 was a tough competition for the Balls of Chaos, being underwhelming until the end. Snarl was eliminated in the heats of Event 1, the Underwater Race, and finished 12th. The team jumped to eighth following a fourth-place finish for Anarchy in Event 2, the Funnel Race. Unfortunately, the team couldn't find the momentum and fell to the bottom half of the standings after Event 3, Balancing, and stayed there for the rest of the season, with only three top-half finishes in the next eleven events. As of Event 14, Surfing, the team were in 15th overall.

Boc19 Collision

The Balls of Chaos on the podium for Collision.

However, the Balls of Chaos started to turn things around in the final two events. In Event 15, Collision, the team managed to win a silver medal, beating the Raspberry Racers in the quarterfinals, and overcoming the Chocolatiers in the semifinals before losing to the O'rangers in the final. This made the team rise to 13th overall. They followed this up with Tumult winning the final event, the Sand Rally. The team ended the tournament in ninth overall, better than they could have imagined after such a poor start.

As the Balls of Chaos prepared for the Marble League 2020 Qualifiers, the team received a letter from the JMRC. The letter turned out to be an invitation to take part in Marbula One Season 1. The team accepted and sent Anarchy, “The Revolutionary”, and Clutter, the “Red Hot Mess”, to represent them.[2]

2020[]

Marbula One Season 1[]

Boc M1S1

Clutter wins the Momotorway Grand Prix.

Marbula One Season 1 started with a poor opening qualifying at the Savage Speedway for Clutter, where they qualified in fifteenth. They managed to climb up to eleventh, starting the team's Marbula One campaign with no points. Anarchy qualified in ninth at the O'raceway, yet finished in tenth, giving the team their first point, and putting the team in 13th overall. The team's fortunes changed when Clutter won their first Grand Prix at the Momotorway Grand Prix, narrowly beating their rival Prim, jumping to sixth overall. The next three Grands Prix were mediocre for the Balls of Chaos as they scored no points. They earned their next points with a fifth-place finish at the Razzway Grand Prix for Anarchy, despite the chaos of the restart and the fan invasion. Finally, another fifth-place finish for Clutter at Midnight Bay made the team finish in ninth overall.[2]

Marble League 2020[]

Clutter and Anarchy returned to Hunluen to train daily with the rest of the team in their training center, The Pandemonium. One time during training, they even challenged each other to a race through the busy streets of Hunluen outside the center. Harmony insisted that variety in training methods, no matter how strange they may seem, was the most effective way to improve.

BOCML20

Anarchy winning a silver in the Long Jump.

The Balls of Chaos had a fairly average performance at the Marble League 2020 Qualifiers with two mid-pack performances as well as a second-place finish for Anarchy in Funnel Endurance and an 18th-place finish in Block Pushing. This was enough to make the team qualify for Marble League 2020, finishing in seventh overall, proud that they had once more successfully qualified.

The Balls Of Chaos once again lived up to their name by starting Marble League 2020 with four inconsistent performances — a fourth and a fifth-place finish in Balancing and Funnel Endurance, and two thirteenth-place finishes in the Halfpipe and Newton's Cradle. This inconsistency left the team in ninth overall. Despite having just competed in the previous event, Anarchy competed in the Long Jump where they managed to win the team's first and only medal of the games, a silver, repeating their success from the Ski Jump in 2018. This took the team up to fifth overall.

BOCML20

Tumult finishing sixth in the Marble Marathon.

Despite this, the team's performances began to go downhill. In the next six events, the Balls of Chaos finished between 13th and 15th, which included Disarray's individual debut in the Triathlon. The team had slumped down to 12th overall. The team managed two mid-pack finishes in the Relay Run and the High Jump before falling back to another two bottom-half finishes, being eliminated from winning the competition after their 15th-place finish in the Team Aquathlon. The Balls of Chaos were in 15th place overall with one event remaining, eight points ahead of last place Mellow Yellow. A lot of pressure rested on Tumult to avoid finishing in last. Despite the pressure, Tumult finished sixth in the Marble Marathon, enough to keep the team from finishing last but not enough to move them out of 15th overall. This was their worst result so far in the Marble League.

Despite their poor performance, the team's spirits were not dampened. They returned to Hunluen to continue training, determined to do better. Their training, while rigorous, was also inconsistent, balancing hard work and fun. After seeing comments on the Marblebase joking about a dance competition between the Balls of Chaos and the Pinkies, the two teams decided to have a dance-off. They met up with the Pinkies for a dance-off, starting a new tradition for both teams and establishing a friendly rivalry between the two teams.[2]

Marbula One Season 2[]

The Balls of Chaos were invited to Marbula One Season 2, which they accepted. Coach Harmony selected Clutter but replaced Anarchy with Tumult “The Tempest” for this season.

O'raceway21Podium

Tumult's podium finish at the O'raceway Grand Prix.

Continuing their poor streak, Clutter failed to qualify for the Minty Mania Grand Prix. Despite the poor start, Tumult did not lose hope and qualified at the O'raceway Grand Prix in sixth. During the race, they managed to gain some places and finished in third just ahead of rival Rima of Team Primary. With renewed confidence, Clutter returned to the Honeydome Grand Prix but could only manage a 12th-place finish. Similarly, Tumult finished eight at the Aquamaring Grand Prix. Tumult was selected to race at the team's home Grand Prix at Tumult Turnpike. Despite a good start to their qualifying run, they hit Turn 6 too hard and failed to qualify. Mediocrity continued into the final Grand Prix of the first half of the season at the Arctic Circuit, where Clutter could only manage a tenth-place finish, dropping the team to 13th overall.[2]

2021[]

Marble League Winter Special[]

BOCBobsled

The Balls of Chaos cross the line in Bobsled.

The Balls Of Chaos were invited to the Marble League Winter Special which they accepted, wanting to keep a good reputation through all competitions. Despite their relative success in the 2018 Winter Marble League, the Balls of Chaos performed poorly. Anarchy, Tumult and Snarl could only manage bottom-five finishes in the first three events, the Ice Dash, Snowboard Cross and Speed Skating respectively, putting the team into last place overall with two events left.

The whole team came together in Event 4, Bobsled, to try to pull themselves forward. Even though the team were nervous going first, they had a fast start but a slower end, enough to finish in seventh overall, taking the team up to 14th overall. The team could only manage a ninth-place finish in the final event, Ice Hockey, keeping the team in 14th, a disappointing end to the mini-tournament.[2]

Marbula One Season 2[]

MMGPBOC

Clutter finishing in second at the Momotorway.

Tumult, potentially distracted by their previous failure to qualify or the longer winter break, once again failed to qualify at the Raceforest Grand Prix, dropping the team further down to 15th. Clutter, seeing the disappointment, put everything into the next race at the Momotorway. Repeating their success from the previous season, Clutter finished in second, boosting team morale and bringing them up to tenth overall. Determined to succeed, Tumult returned at the Palette Park Grand Prix, finishing in fourth and lifting the team to eighth overall.

ClutterStuckMMGP

Clutter stuck with Bumble at the Misty Mountain GP.

Clutter kept this momentum by capturing the team's first ever pole position at the Misty Mountain Grand Prix. Unfortunately, Clutter and Tumult's luck ran out at this point. At the start of Lap 7, Clutter narrowly missed the wall of the track when coming off the belt and ended up stuck in the Safety Marble lane, putting an end to their race. During Lap 9, Bumble from the Bumblebees got stuck at turn 6 after a collision with Cerulean. The Safety Marble was released to save Bumble, also releasing Clutter. However, a similar collision with the Safety Marble saw Clutter also get stuck at the same corner along with Bumble. After the Safety Marble failed to save either racer, a red flag was flown and the two racers were rescued and had to retire from the race. Clutter was awarded last place due to getting stuck in the Safety Marble lane earlier than Bumble's stoppage.

The disappointing last-place finishes continued at the Savage Speedway Grand Prix where Tumult finished the Qualifiers in last place, keeping the team in tenth overall. Clutter qualified for the final race at Midnight Bay in second, seemingly setting the team up for success. Unfortunately, the misfortune of Clutter's last race seemed to hang over Clutter and they finished the final Grand Prix of the season in 11th, dropping the team to 11th overall, two positions lower than the previous season.[2]

Off-season[]

The Balls of Chaos returned to The Pandemonium to train when Coach Harmony announced the team had entered the Cranthym Challenges—a new competition that was a mixture of marble sports and puzzles held in late March. Clutter had discovered the tournament and Harmony had entered them, seeing it as a good opportunity to develop skills that would be useful for the upcoming Marble League. They let a few other teams know about the tournament and they were joined by the Savage Speeders, the O'rangers, the Hazers, the Kobalts, the Green Ducks, the Pinkies and multiple less well-known teams.

Cranthym

The awards ceremony following the Cranthym Challenges, depicted by Phoenix.

The team arrived with confidence at The Cranthym, the large hall hosting the tournament. The tournament featured ten different challenges and the team with the most points at the end would win the Cranthym Cup and Crown. The Balls of Chaos had a poor start in the first event, the Maze, finishing 13th. They refused to have their confidence knocked and won the next challenge, Code Breaking. The team continued to perform chaotically but managed to finish the competition in fourth behind the Whizlers, the Hazers and Team Strix.[2]

Marble League 2021[]

BOCML21Q

The Balls of Chaos face rivals Team Primary in the Swing Wave.

Tumult was sent to participate in the Marble League 2021 Practice Race where they finished 14th.[2]

The Balls Of Chaos were seeded into Group A for the Marble League 2021 Qualifiers, the group that many considered the "Group Of Death". Unfortunately, the team finished last in two of the events, the Swing Wave and Sand Rally, with two other mid-table performances. This led to the team finishing the Qualifiers in 11th, meaning failing to qualify for Marble League 2021, their first qualification failure since Marble League 2017.

BOCMLS21

The Balls of Chaos win their heat in the 5 Meter Relay.

The Balls Of Chaos returned in Marble League Showdown 2021. They had a decent start, finishing fifth in the 5 Meter Sprint and Funnel Endurance. This was followed by their only medal of the competition, a silver medal in the 5 Meter Relay. True to their inconsistency, they finished the first half of the competition with a last place finish in Block Pushing, putting the team in fourth overall at the halfway point.

Unfortunately, the Balls of Chaos would perform poorly in the second half of the competition, finishing in the bottom half for all remaining events except for the Sand Mogul Race which was fourth. A last place finish in Marblocross dropped the team to tenth overall. In previous years this would have meant relegation to next year's Showdown, but there was no relegation that year due to the announcement of the addition of four new and returning teams to appear in next year's Showdown.

Marble ManiaX[]

The Balls of Chaos returned to Hunluen to find an official request from Dion Bakker asking them to host a new extreme sports tournament, Marble ManiaX. The team accepted and started to prepare The Pandemonium to host the tournament. As a result, the team had very little time to train. The team's start to the season was acceptable as they finished fourth in the first event, Extreme Diving. Unfortunately, this was later followed by three straight finishes of dead last in Domino Bowling, Extreme Funnels and the Obstacle Run. As a result, the Balls of Chaos fell to last overall with only one event to go. The team was so far behind the seventh-place team, the Shining Swarm, that in order for them to not finish last overall, they had to earn a gold in the final event while the Swarm had to get zero points in that same event. Even though the Balls of Chaos were able to score points in the final event, Super Collision, it was not enough for the team to escape the basement and therefore, they finished the tournament in last overall, only scoring eight points in total.[3]

2022[]

Marbula One Season 3[]

Despite their rather disappointing recent performances, including dead last in Marble ManiaX, the Balls of Chaos were invited to participate in Marbula One Season 3. They accepted, and once again, Clutter and Tumult were chosen as their racers.

The team was selected to host the very first Grand Prix of the season at Tumult Turnpike and this time, Clutter was selected to represent the home team. Despite qualifying in 11th and barely missing Q2, they were able to climb up the order during the race and hang on in 3rd for a portion of the race before eventually finishing 2nd for the home team, earning themselves their second silver and third medal of Marbula One. Tumult was somewhat able to match Clutter's success at the Sleet Street Grand Prix where they qualified in 2nd and earned 2 points for the team as a result. However, Tumult wasn't able to replicate their success from the qualifiers and fell down the order to finish in 11th. Clutter, though, was able to capture pole position at the Misty Mountain Grand Prix earning the team 3 points before the race. In the race, they were able to redeem themselves from the Season 2 Misty Mountain Grand Prix and ended up finishing first. This put them into second in the overall standings, 1 point behind the leading O'rangers. At the O'raceway Grand Prix, Tumult only managed a 16th-place finish in qualifying and thus missed out on Q2. In the race, they did worse and finished in an abysmal 17th, only getting as high as 14th and claiming zero points for the team. Despite this, they still managed to stay in 2nd place in the team championship, 1 point behind the leaders as Clementin had a poor race as well for the O'rangers.

Next up was the Mellow Meadows Grand Prix. Clutter qualified in P8 and managed to get themselves into the lead by lap 2 of the race. They stayed in front the entire race until they were passed halfway through the final lap by Red Eye and Orangin of the Crazy Cat's Eyes and O'rangers respectively. They still managed to finish in third place, however, dropped to third in the Teams' Championship. After two bottom-half showings by both Tumult and Clutter respectively, the Balls of Chaos sat in 4th; 39 points behind the leading Crazy Cat's Eyes. Tumult surprised everyone at the Stardust Accelerator Grand Prix by qualifying in 5th and ending in 3rd with a tight battle with Aryp from Team Primary. The Balls of Chaos, though, couldn't keep it up in the final four races of the season having their highest finish being 7th at Midnight Bay by Tumult. They finished in 4th place, just missing the podium with Clutter and Tumult finishing in 6th and 24th respectively in the Racers' Championship Standings.

Marble League 2022[]

Because four teams were entering the Marble League as expansion teams, the bottom four teams of the 2021 Marble League Showdown were allowed to participate in the Marble League 2022 Qualifiers, including the Balls of Chaos. The four new/returning teams took the placements for the showdown. Before the league started, the team made Disarray a main member of the team while Snarl took their spot as the reserve member. They were sorted into Group A in the Marble League 2022 Qualifiers, and started off with a 3rd place finish in the first event, Climbing, following it up with a 4th place in 5 Meter Hurdles. They finished the group tied on points with the Indigo Stars at the cutoff line in 6th and 7th place, though they would win the tiebreaker on position countback, which qualified them for Marble League 2022.

In Marble League 2022, the Balls of Chaos started promisingly with a silver medal by both Disarray and Snarl in Climbing, though they would finish 15th in Balancing which dropped them to 5th overall. A string of poor performances would see them drop to 15th before being surpassed by the Midnight Wisps after they finished last in Block Pushing. For the remainder of the season, the Balls of Chaos would stay in last place, barring Domino Bowling, in which they rose to 15th place after the Midnight Wisps finished last in the event. The Balls of Chaos would end the season with a DNF in the first round of the Elimination Race, finishing the season with multiple anti-records: the worst points-per-event in Marble League history (4.00 per event), the lowest point total in a 16-event Marble League (64), the worst average event position in a season (12.38), the most bottom 3 finishes in a season (9), the joint-longest run of consecutive bottom three finishes (4), and the greatest amount of Lead Cube points in a single season (30).

The Balls of Chaos competed in the Xmas Marble Race. They were represented by Clutter who finished in 25th out of 32 teams.

2023[]

Marbula One Season 4[]

The Balls of Chaos were invited to the 4th Season of Marbula One, sending out both Clutter and Tumult to race for the third consecutive year.

Trivia[]

  • The Balls of Chaos were the only team that appeared in Marble League 2016 and 2018 to qualify for Marble League 2019 and Marble League 2020, as the Snowballs did not qualify.
  • They also hold current the Marble League record for Ski Jump, a full 121 cm.
  • The Balls of Chaos were the first team to win two consecutive gold medals. These medals were in Events 2 and 3 of Marble League 2018, Ski Jump and Halfpipe. That feat would also be achieved by the eventual overall winners of that year's Marble League, the Midnight Wisps.
  • The Balls of Chaos are the only team to have ever had fewer than zero points in a Marble League competition. This happened in Marble League 2016 after their disqualification from the Relay Race event, where they had -3 points.
  • The Balls of Chaos have a rivalry with Team Primary, who have a similar look to them.
  • Scoring only 64 points in the 16 events of Marble League 2022, the Balls of Chaos broke the anti-records for both the lowest point total in a 16-event season and the fewest points per event (4), both previously held by the Oceanics in Marble League 2019 (70 points total, 4.375 points per event).
  • The Balls of Chaos are the only active Marble League team to not have the JMR watermark on the current version of their logo.
